Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they begin the process of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to provide any compensation.
