Study Reveals Arctic Bear DNA Variations May Aid Adjustment to Climate Warming

Researchers have observed alterations in polar bear DNA that might help the mammals adjust to hotter climates. This study is considered to be the primary instance where a notable link has been identified between escalating temperatures and changing DNA in a wild animal species.

Environmental Crisis Puts at Risk Polar Bear Survival

Global warming is threatening the survival of polar bears. Projections show that a significant majority of them could be lost by 2050 as their snowy home disappears and the weather becomes warmer.

“The genome is the blueprint inside every biological unit, guiding how an creature evolves and functions,” said the principal investigator, Dr. Alice Godden. “Through analyzing these bears’ active genes to local climate data, we observed that rising temperatures seem to be causing a substantial surge in the activity of transposable elements within the warmer Greenland region bears’ DNA.”

DNA Study Uncovers Key Adaptations

Scientists analyzed blood samples taken from polar bears in two regions of Greenland and compared “transposable elements”: compact, roving sections of the genome that can influence how other genes work. The analysis focused on these genetic markers in correlation to climate conditions and the related shifts in genetic activity.

As regional weather and diets shift due to changes in habitat and food supply forced by global heating, the genetics of the bears appear to be adjusting. The community of polar bears in the most temperate part of the region showed greater modifications than the populations farther north.

Potential Adaptive Strategy

“This finding is important because it indicates, for the first instance, that a particular population of Arctic bears in the warmest part of Greenland are utilizing ‘mobile genetic elements’ to swiftly modify their own DNA, which may be a desperate coping method against melting ice sheets,” added Godden.

Conditions in north-east Greenland are colder and more stable, while in the south-east there is a more temperate and less icy habitat, with significant climate variability.

DNA sequences in species evolve over time, but this process can be hastened by climate pressure such as a rapidly heating environment.

Food Source Variations and Genetic Hotspots

The study noted some intriguing DNA changes, such as in regions associated to energy storage, that might assist polar bears persist when prey is unavailable. Bears in hotter areas had a greater proportion of fibrous, vegetarian diets versus the lipid-rich, marine nutrition of Arctic bears, and the DNA of these specific animals appeared to be adjusting to this new reality.

Godden stated: “The research pinpointed several key genomic regions where these jumping genes were highly active, with some found in the critical areas of the genome, suggesting that the bears are experiencing fast, significant DNA modifications as they respond to their melting sea ice habitat.”

Next Steps and Broader Impact

The following stage will be to study other subspecies, of which there are 20 globally, to determine if similar genetic shifts are occurring to their DNA.

This research could help safeguard the bears from disappearance. However, the experts stressed that it was essential to stop global warming from escalating by cutting the burning of fossil fuels.

“Caution is still required, this provides some hope but does not mean that polar bears are at any less danger of disappearance. It remains crucial to be pursuing every action we can to reduce global carbon emissions and slow temperature increases,” summarized Godden.
